After having won the “Green Award” for the worldwide greenest marathon from the “Association of International Marathons and Distance Races” (AIMS) 2014 we decided to apply this year again. The application package describing everything we do for protecting the environment and sustainability has been sent to Athens where the AIMS is headquartered.
We believe in this so much that since 2005 we have invested over 200.000 € into environmental actions and sustainibility adding additional 17.000 € every year. Our goal and that of our sponsors is simple: make the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon greener every year.
This year our green activities are supported by our partners ASICS, BMW und Fattoria La Vialla. All ASICS shirts for runners and volunteers are made from 100% recycled polyester. It takes about 10 to 14 plastic bottles to make one shirt. The material, PET, is completely recycable and can be made into high quality polyester fibres.
On the “Electric Avenue” from BMW you can take part in charging the battery of the leading car, a BMW i3, with just the power generated by your steps. And as part of the Fattoria La Vialla Toscana Pasta Party we will have a live count of all CO2 emissions saved by every pasta dish as compared to traditionally manufactured products.
Organic food remains a staple of the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon. We will continue to offer only the best quality for our runners. Fattoria la Vialla from Italy will again serve organic food at the pasta party in the Festhalle one day before the race. And during the race all fruits at the food stations are organic as well. We just signed a contract with the “Umweltforum Rhein-Main” for 2015 to provide us with five tons of organic bananas and 700 kilos of apples for all runners. And spectators can a enjoy organic food at the food tent on the Opernplatz.
Rosbacher mineral water from the family owned local company “Hassia Mineralquellen” will be served along the race course and after the finish line.
We are proud to say that the Federal Ministry for the Environment and the German Olympic Sports Confederation declared our commitment as best practice.
Please support our efforts to make the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon greener every year when planning your trip to Frankfurt and behaving as a participant of the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon. Avoid unnecessary waste, dispose of your waste properly, use your race number as ticket for free public transport, use the free shuttle service fromthe the Rebstock multi-storey car park to the Trade Fair grounds or form a carpool to minimise your individual CO2 footprint – thank you for your support!
