5 Drinking tips for marathon runners from Dr. Katrin Stücher

  1. Do I have to drink more while doing sports when its warmer?

While doing any type of sport, the hotter the temperature, that faster the body temperature rises.  This leads to an even further state of dehydration.  That’s why it is necessary to be hydrated by any sport.  If the sport activity is longer than 30 min., you should supply yourself with additional water and electrolytes by hotter conditions.  You can also sink your body temperature by pouring water over your head.

  1. Can I drink too much?

The suggested amount of fluid intake per hour is about 750 ml.  That’s why you should pay attention and not only take in tap water.  By the hotter temperatures, are many nutrients sweated out of your body, and they can only be replenished in the drinks that you take in.  Also, drinking too much water alone is very dangerous.  When drinking a high amount of liquids, you are rinsing out the life necessary sodium that your body needs, this can lead to a so-called water poisoning.

  1. Is it good to drink cold drinks to cool your body?

No, you don’t have to drink an ice-cold drink to get this feeling.  Then when the temperature is taken away from the drinks, your stomach has to work that much harder balance this.  Through the extra work that your stomach has to do, you’ll need much more energy.

  1. Are warm drinks better for hot temperatures?

Drinks that are held at room temperature are better.  And yes, hot drinks like in India or North Africa are seen more often and it makes sense:  warm fruits or herbal teas lighten up the burden on the body.  It sounds quite like a paradox?  But it’s not at all: Because when the skins sweats, the pores open and this helps the body cool down even better.

  1. Is it enough to drink only when you are thirsty?

If you start to drink when you are already thirsty, then the dehydration has already started.  To prevent this by hotter temperatures, you should already drink enough liquids ahead of time.
